Educational bill banning critical race theory in South Carolina moves up for debate

COLUMBIA, SC — Critical race theory in your child’s classroom.

A sensitive subject was debated Tuesday by a panel of House lawmakers.

The group talked about plans that would restrict what can and cannot be taught in South Carolina’s public schools.

This was the first meeting in a month about five proposals that would ban critical race theory. There was no public testimony this time after 18 hours worth during the last series of hearings.

“Legislative counsel drafted the bill that was after notes that were taken by staff listening to testimony for 18 hours and listening to your questions that were asked from here listening to those and taking them into consideration," explained Rep. Merita Allison, (R) Greenville & Spartanburg County.

Lawmakers dissected each of the five plans combining the sections into one larger bill, but some of the moves raised concerns.

“ I just think we need to slow this down take another look and let it go through the process so that we can fully vet this bill so it won't have the negative consequences that it could have if we’re just rushing this through," opposed Rep. Rosalyn Henderson-Myers, (D) Spartanburg County.

The proposal would not ban lessons that are part of state standards or involve students in an impartial discussion based on a group of people.

The bill however was stripped of subjective language that could potentially make students feel uncomfortable promoting one race color, sex, or religion as inherently superior…
